Exorcism rituals in China often included the ringing of bells which is said to scatter the spirits. This practice found its way into the lion dance and dozens of bells were sewn onto the tail along with the silver discs. Even if you don't ascribe to this belief, putting on your best lion dance performance means involving all of the senses and the chiming of bells as as the lion moves is one way of doing that.

Visible Bells Hidden Bells
A dozen bells strategically sewn around the tail can add to both the visual and audial appeal of the lion's movements. Other makers preferred to hide the bells under the flaps and folds of the tail keeping them heard but not seen.

Bells: $5 per dozen
